This is a slightly unfair question, perhaps, but do you have any suggestions of where you'd expect to find it instead?
I can think of two other possibilities. One is to show the counts for all sections in the navigation pane, instead of just for the "In Progress" section as is done now. This would temporarily eliminate the need for the status bar, but it would make the navigation pane rather busy. The other possibility would be a bar spanning the top of the main pane only. This also would temporarily eliminate the need for the status bar. I say "temporarily", though, because in future versions I expect the bottom bar to also contain buttons at the left end for adding/modifying software channels and offline installation lists. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareStore#Eventual%20scope> And at the right end, I hope, eventually a zoom slider (like F-Spot has) for application icon views.
