Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Summary: I was using pidgin without any problems on my Ubuntu 9.04
64-bit system. Ubuntu did an update of my system as would happen
normally/regularly. I rebooted when requested. After the reboot, Pidgin
refused to start.

The update took place around 18:45 CET on September 18th.

Subsequent inquery revealed the following information:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:    Ubuntu 9.04
Release:        9.04

$ apt-cache policy pidgin
pidgin:
  Installed: 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.4
  Candidate: 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.4
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.4 0
        500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty-updates/main Packages
        500 http://security.ubuntu.com jaunty-security/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8 0
        500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages

Expected behaviour: pidgin starting and auto-logging in for my MSN and
GTalk accounts.

What happend: Pidgin crashed.

Investigation of my own:

$ pidgin -v
Pidgin 2.5.5

$ pidgin
Segmentation fault

DEBUG output (after removing hostname and user info and replacing by *'s)

Subsequently starting pidgin without automatically logging in allowed
normal use IF reconnecting to each account one-by-one. I.e. starting
pidgin like so:
