Diagnostic mode might "work" but results in waiting through lots of
diagnostics on every cold start...  so not crazy about that option.

FWIW, I've gone to Linux Mint for a while and I do not have this problem with 
Mint. I believe the reason has something to do w/the fact that Mint loads a 
background image behind the grub menu options. But what it has to do w/that I 
can't imagine. Maybe just slows something down enough to change results. But 
the prob. is graphics related because the Grub menu is actually there, just not 
visible.
(Try configuring it to wait a good while before going to the default option and 
you'll see what I mean... it sits exactly as long as it should... with an 
invisible menu "displayed")
