I Have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my PC and Laptop and have the same problem. To connect to the internet I use as modem the "Motorola W3m" cellphone. Ubuntu recognizes it and works fine with it. But I have the occasional problem with the sustainability of the NetworkManager I get a message that he is not running. Reading in the web http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1184623 I guess the problem is something with the EVDO mode... but my cellphone do not have the option to switch to "EVDO only mode"... I have noticed too that when I am in the city where i study this problem is less constantly, but when i am in the city where i live the problem is very constantly.
