Buona sera, thank you for your explicative note and for the appreciation about Bologna! and many thanks for the great job with texlive. I'll try to post the same thing to the debhelper mantainers, then... I know that zxpdf can be an option... but I like better kpdf and many people are used to acroread... and apart from that, I believe it is a matter of elegance: i find the very idea of compressing something that is already compressed slightly disturbing. In any case I perfectly understand your argument for sticking with debhelper, dh_compress and the debian standards... It's probably those that were born when most of the documentation was postscript and that did not catch up with more up-to-date standards like PDF that achieve (reasonable) compression themselves.
