I should have added to my previous post that I booted from a USB stick using an image from the Ubuntu 'USB Startup Disk Creator' application. Not sure whether this is related or if it is a different issue but when I tell GRUB to boot directly from the downloaded ISO image, I do get to a desktop without signing on; however my (wireless USB) keyboard and mouse are locked out and I need to hit the reset button on the console to regain control of the computer.
