Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ibus-table

With the old SCIM input method framework, one could use the LaTeX input
method (package scim-tables-additional) to enter useful symbols, such as
\pi for π and \Pi for Π, but the new IBUS framework seems rather broken.
Instead of waiting for a backslash, it triggers immediately -- and then
tries, unsuccessfully, to match everything you type.

Thus, you get the following behavior:
ibustriestomatcheverycharacteryoutypetothetable,
soitendsupeatingalmosteverysinglespaceyoutype, onlystoppingonpunctuation.

** Affects: ibus-table (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
