I'm having the same issue, which started after I did an automatic update
in Ubuntu Jaunty 8.04. The wireless card was detected and working fine
until this update. Now the network card doesn't show up in the Gnome
network-manager or ifconfig. Previously it was assigned eth1.

>From lshw:
                   *-network
                description: Network controller
                product: BCM4312 802.11b/g
                vendor: Broadcom Corporation
                physical id: 0
                bus info: p...@0000:0c:00.0
                version: 01
                width: 64 bits
                clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
                configuration: driver=b43-pci-bridge latency=0 module=ssb

I will try testing with the upstream kernel. I'm not able to test with
the latest development release of Ubuntu at the moment as this is my
office laptop.
