I'm running a Compaq Presario C712nr notebook with the latest released Karmic, and I'm getting a related issue. Let the machine run during the night, and when I came about to eventually wake it back up I found that the fan was periodically blowing at full force while being otherwise inoperable in the periods in between. Logging out and back in seems to have restored fan operation, and I thought it best to report it.
