I should note that this is indeed because of xsplash not reacting on the 
resolution change.
When X starts up on my laptop with my external display connected it uses the 
highest common resolution of the internal and external display in mirror mode, 
which isn't the native resolution for either one. When I log in g-s-d turns the 
internal display off and sets the external display to its native resolution. 
Unfortunately xsplash doesn't react to that by changing its size. This causes 
the underlying gnome-session to be partly exposed.
