Public bug reported:

Was installing Xubuntu to a 1GB Usb flash drive (partitioned
automatically with the installer). File copying slow (as expected),
after about an hour it crashed on 50%. No attempt at reproducing effect
has been made (yet).

Pc details: AMD64 3800+, 1Gb memory, Nvidia 6800GT, No connected HDs at
time.
