If you wait long enough, it will come back to life on its own. I have found - both on Jaunty and Karmic that it's about the same time to shutdown and startup as it is to come out of hibernation. Suspend is something else, but my system, for some reason went into hibernation after 2 hours instead of suspend. Now I just shut it down.
