The big problem here is... you might accidentally shut down. When I accidentally click the "Log Out" button in the top right, it doesn't just log me out; it asks.
This bug says that if you type "Shutdown," you get shutdown without logging out of Gnome; i.e., kill -9 gnome-session style log-out (more realistically it's probably that gdm got stopped).
