I think I have a similar problem here. I've never been able to use the
brightness buttons on my HP laptop (an 8510w) so I used "nvclock -S" to
set it. When pressing the Fn keys it changes the brightness in the
notification, but the real brightness stays the same.

When using smartdimmer, -s works but both -d and -i don't.

Ubuntu 9.04 here, HP 8510w, NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M.
