I'm confirming this because I've just seen the same thing myself; pidgin

To be more specific, lets say you are on a big irc network and you open the
channel window - in my case
by doing a /list pattern it came up and was populating and I clicked on the
name to get it to sort; the whole UI
froze until it had got the whole list (which took over 30 seconds - this was on
freenode with zillions of channels)
