As I said, during the install, it recommended my machine name to be
"rick-laptop". I decided to change it (during the install) to
"dapper-local". However, when I first logged in, I could not access anying
that required gksu.

To be honest, I cannot remember how I changed it back to "dapper-local". I
thought I did it in the /etc/aliases file. To the best of my recollection,
it still showed "rick-laptop", and I changed it to "dapper-local". I could
be wrong about that though. Perhaps I changed the Hostname in Networking
Settings to "dapper-local". In any event, whatever I did fixed the problem.

If you like, I can go to VMWare and do another fresh install, and try to
duplicate the problem (I don't want to hose my real box).
