Binary package hint: pulseaudio
I get virtually no sound output when using pulseaudio, running rhythmbox
or trying to make default window sounds heard.
The system is an Averatec 3180 laptop.
Ubuntu version and kernel version (Karmic alpha updated a few minutes ago
online)

I have not been able to get any usable sound output since installing a
Karmic alpha version - today I noticed faint output from running
Rhythmbox playing very loud music.
This is a dual-boot system - I just booted into Debian Lenny to make
sure the hardware is working.
Further information generated by "ubuntu-bug pulseaudio" is attached.
