Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
This is similar to bug 33146. It's a regression since 5.10.
The laptop is a Dell C800, circa 2001. It's old, but not obsolete by
any standard (especially as it is used mostly as a thin client to
connect to a much faster machine).
In 5.10, there were no problems. The display was properly detected by
default, in both the installed distro and the livecd.
I didn't try 6.06.
In 6.10, both in the installer and the installed distribution, the
display ends up being 800x600 (the panel is 1400x1050) and with sync
problems which lead to the screen being striped over several bands (I
will try to upload a photo). The reason for this seems that the
HorizSync of the display isn't correctly detected, and so all of the
valid modes are ignored by the X server.
There are several fixes, of different effectiveness:
1. If you press fn+f7 (which is marked "font"), the display will shift from
expanded to pixel-for-pixel (so the 800x600 is a square in the middle of the
display) which fixes the sync problems. Pressing it again leads to an expanded
display but without the sync problems.
2. If you change the driver from "ati" to "vesa" in xorg.conf, you get the
proper resolution but an incredibly slow display (especially when manipulating
bitmaps).
3. If you add the line "HorizSync 60.0-80.0" in the display section, then the
problem disappears and video is at full speed.
I'll attach the following:
1. A digital photo of the display with the problem;
2. The x.org config as detected (with the problem);
3. The x.org server output as detected (with the problem);
4. The corrected x.org config;
5. The x.org server output as corrected.
