I did a system upgrade, now my display is broken. But the kernel-thing
was the right hint: Grub loaded a very old kernel (2.6.28 or something),
although 2.6.31.11 was installed. I must have made a mistake when grub
wanted to update the menu.lst. Now I did that manually, /dev/snd now has
more files in it and playing sounds via aplay worked so far, but I have
not had the opportunity to see a GUI because the last apt-get upgrade
broke my graphics. But it seems like this was a self-induced bug. Sorry
for that and thanks for the help!
