I'm taking the liberty to mark this bug confirmed, given that I can
reproduce it on another Vaio model, and given that the same solution was
also mentioned at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/SonyVaioVGN-T350 (however,
those wiki notes were written for 7.10 and 8.04).

Desired behaviour: it would be great if this "External amplifier"
setting was disabled by default.

Not only is it rather hard to find the problem (I have no idea what the
whole switch means, I just happened to see it in the wiki page!), but
making the switch available in the volume-control window at all requires
the user to actively select it in the Preferences window first.
