I have been reading a lot about this issue and even tried the Xorg
"AccelMethod" "XAA" from one of the earlier posts. It rendered my
notebook unable to boot Ubuntu 9.04 at all, and I had to use the
Recovery / automatically repair graphics tool (which restored the
original Xorg.conf file) to get it back.

But now that I see someone else is dealing with a VAIO PCG-R505 ( I have
a 505DL) I'd like to input what I have learned about the whole Intel
82830M Graphics Driver issue while previously building an Ultimate Boot
Disc 4 Windows from downloaded files. At first, it would not boot the
505 either. But eventually I discovered why.

On the Intel.com/support/graphics site I ran their Driver Update Utility
from Windows XP on the 505 to see what I could learn about the driver it
was using. Intel had this to say: "A customized computer manufacturer
driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is
not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead
of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical
issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for
your computer.

So they are saying Sony modified their driver in order to make it work
on the VAIO, and it is obvious they don't recommend trying to use any
other driver. Now, Sony has only ever released 2 versions of the driver,
and the last one was in 2003. I think the bottom line is going to be the
same here as it was in building that boot disc.

What I had to do was extract the graphics driver from the running WinXP
OS on the Sony, and replace the generic Intel 8.xxx driver package in
the files that were provided to make the ISO and burn the disc. In so
doing, the disc will work on the Sony, and I have used it several times.

So somehow Ubuntu 9.04 either needs to be set up to use the windows
driver specific to each of our notebooks, or someone is going to have to
figure out a workaround to let the generic driver do all that each of
those "computer manufacturer drivers" do, which I imagine is an
impossible task, and why Intel won't do it.

If the problem is ever solved, I think that will be the way it is done.
