Public bug reported:
The Dell Inspiron 1525, which is certified hardware - see
http://webapps.ubuntu.com/certification/list/?category=Laptop - works
out of the box when it comes to internal microphones.
Once an external microphone is plugged in, there is no configuration in
gnome-volume-control that will allow recording from the external
microphone.
Bug #315276 proposes:
echo "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-bios" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Result: I did not see a difference in recording options in gnome-volume-control.
Bug #308564
echo "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Result: External mic now has exclusive access to sound input. Unplugging
external mic and testing all other options in gnome-volume-control does not
allow user to change input source to mic (beside camera) or front mic (beside
SD card reader).
