/etc/default/grub is not particularly accessible to inexperienced users,
either.
I think it's more likely that this will be solved by the development of
something with a proper user interface capable of working with grub2,
and its developers working with us to determine exactly what they need.
In the meantime, I do not expect that we will be in any rush to knock
together half-formed interfaces for this; editing the scripts in
/etc/grub.d/ will do for now, given that this is purely cosmetic and
very few people actually *need* to change these.
