Hi all, Just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Dell XPS m1210. I had a similar Audio problem aswell. My laptop's right speaker made a horrible scratching noise while playing sound.
Thanks to Brian Dols and his howto link (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto) I fixed the problem. It was easy to fix, even for linux noobs like myself :P Ubuntu rocks!
