It is possible to display the graphics files by replacing the filter box
contents with "*". Most of the time this will not actually let you
insert the picture though; the error box "Unknown graphic format" is
displayed after confirming the selection. In my most recent test this
happens every time. In previous tests, it seemed that you would get to
insert a picture once, the second and subsequent times you got "Unknown
graphic format."

I can confirm the other symptoms reported above. In summary:

1) Excessive times to display the file list
2) Inserting graphics fails with "unknown graphic format"
3) Graphics files not shown in the dialog

There are also some other strange things with this dialog, such as it
insisting on opening up in some .kde directory.

Tested with a fully updated Karmic as of now.
