I'm having a similar problem as BlueCanary9999. The laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Y530. I'm running Linux Mint. The major difference is I got the problem going from kernel 2.6.28-11 to 2.6.28-15. Other then that, the symptoms appear to be the same, though I haven't waited 20 minutes to see if it continues booting after it appears to hang after "[ 3.784504] Disabling IRQ #9". If I use kernel version 2.6.28-11 it still works fine.
Oh, and instead of having the reversed backlight problem I have a problem where the function keys don't really work correctly. It's bug 368506 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/368506). If anybody could tell me the location of the logs you need or the commands you'd like me to run I'll attach those files for ya.
