I'm also running Karmic and just updated all of my packages. Hibernating seems to work now (it didn't before). I've just tried to hibernate/resume and it did work 6 times in a row with different applications running like thunar, gnome-terminal, chromium-browser and file roller. Packages I use that might matter are: openbox, wicd, xserver-xorg-video-radeon.
