Thanks for the reply. Sorry but I neglected to mention that I already set the BIOS display config to Discrete, as I'm using Windows XP on the system (XP does not properly support switchable graphics cards either, as far as I know). I do have the ATI drivers installed (I've tried without them too).
In short, this is not an issue with the switchable graphics devices, as I disabled that in BIOS. One additional piece of weirdness: I installed an updated driver for the graphics card in Windows, and the behaviour of the error when booting Windows changed. I now get a blue screen, followed by a reboot and normal loading, when I load Windows after Ubuntu. Formerly it would load but the graphics would be messed up and it couldn't see the video card unless I reinstalled it, or more simply restarted.
