When using the method posted by Jordan when I press CTRL+ALT+FN+F1 I switch to the console but instead of getting a shell prompt I just get a blank screen with the backlight on. I can type in sudo apt-get update and when I hit enter the CD drive spins as if it is executing. Unfortunately I'm unable to edit xorg.conf like this even if I managed to type all of the shell commands. There must be some other solution or way to get to a place to install the fglrx driver. Any ideas?
