I was running a sh file with the following command and mencoder simply crashed
after a while.
mencoder -oac lavc -ovc lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=dvd:tsaf -vf
crop=640:480,scale=720:480,expand=720:576,pullup,softskip,harddup -srate 48000
