Thomas emailed me off-bug with some additional insights: "I'd like to bring your attention to bug #439138 [1], which I think affects a large group of people and is important to get fixed before the final release. The issue seems to be that on fast systems (for example systems with an SSD in it), X is started "too early" during the boot precess and this somehow results in the tty fd being in an error state, which causes select() to return immediately, but there's no code in X to recover from the error, leading to 100% CPU utilization."
