I've tested this further and it seems to be related to hardware. I first swapped the hard drive in my previously mentioned laptop for a spare and tried various partition arrangements and it always crashed at the same point. Then I put the original drive into a USB enclosure hooked it to my main desktop and tried installing using qemu-kvm and it had no problem installing on that drive with my desired partition layout. Next I tried hooking up the USB drive to my spare desktop, which has a similar chipset to the laptop, and the installer crashes at the same point as previously. Finally I connected the USB hard drive to my Aspire One netbook, and it installed to the USB drive without issue.
