Have some more information on this, I managed to get a dm9601 USB nic working.
Steps taken: 1) Power up b2.0 board. 2) Set date/time correctly. 3) Power down board. 4) Plug in dm9601 based USB nic with network cable inserted. 5) Power back on board. Result: Network manager sees the interface and I have a working network.
