I'm having similar difficulties (not precisely the same, but similar
enough that for now I'll assume it's the same bug).
I'm using Jaunty. My connection is disassociated immediately (I never
see the four bars). It works fine in 2.6.28-14 (I'm using it right this
moment), and must have been working fine in 2.6.28-15.49, since I've
been using it without incident until now, but suddenly in 2.6.28-15.52
(which was updated just a few days ago), it no longer works.
I'm afraid I forgot to save a copy of dmesg before rebooting to
2.6.28-14, but I was getting the same basic behavior: association with
the local AP, and then "disassociating by local choice (reason=3)".
