Have you tried testing with a live CD of jaunty, or the new karmic beta? It is likely that you will have better control over your sound volume in a later version of Ubuntu, and testing either the latest stable release, Jaunty, or the latest beta of the development release, karmic, will help you find out whether the problem is resolved, and help the developers determine whether any more work needs to be done to solve this bug.
