The laptop recovered with further updates, but my Karmic desktop computer partition did not. It has a built in Intel 945G but runs a Nvidia graphic card GEforce 6200, as the 945G never did like the Acer AL1715 monitor.
I used the GParted live CD to reformat the partition on the desktop computer and reinstalled using the Karmic Beta, now 2.6.31-12.39. There have been no issues since; even the boot - which was a black screen until login - is behaving normally. I restored all of the applications that were previously on the desktop machine, so that doesn't seem to have been an issue. As far as retracing the logs, they are gone forever with the reformatting.
