The only solution I've found so far is to turn the monitor off after
grub, wait about 10 seconds and turn the monitor back on (this only
works 10% of the time). If this doesn't work I have to press the power
button, press alt-s and try the boot again.

Fortunately, when the display is up (albeit only 800x600, have to set up
1600x1200 with xrandr each boot) it is solid (the current beta liveCD
locks up after ~10 seconds - but the current daily (as of 7/10) is fine)
and compiz runs very well.
