Well, I found a workaround: I added the following lines in the "Monitor"
section corresponding to my external monitor in xorg.conf:

        HorizSync       30-83
        VertRefresh     55-75

These are the figures that appear in the log in the part where the external 
screen is detected:
(II) RADEON(0): Ranges: V min: 55 V max: 75 Hz, H min: 30 H max: 83 kHz, 
PixClock max 130 MHz

However it seems that for some reason these detected values are
"forgotten" at some point. I've never had to have those lines before
yesterday.
