I saw this a couple of days ago on a Dell Mini 9. Something killed all
the desktop apps during an upgrade involving many packages. This forced
me to hard-reset the machine, boot into the half-upgraded system and fix
the mess from one of the VTs. Very annoying if it indeed happens
systematically.
