  After installing the nvidia driver and rebooting, a black screen
  appears.
  
  This happened on Hardy with Ubuntu and Gnome and it happens now with
  kubuntu and KDE4.
  
  The nvidia driver version is 173.14.16 and is installed via EnvyNG.
  
  I found a post saying that the nvidia driver startup is very slow and xorg 
server timeout is too short:

  I followed his instructions:

  However, the problem still persists. After I followed the instructions,
  enabled the nvidia driver and rebooted, I got the attached screen.
