Hi,
Are you positive the kernel did indeed install successfully? Please
provide the output of:
sudo apt-cache policy linux-image-2.6.31-12-generic
If it does show this is installed, when you boot, hold down the shift
key and bring up the grub2 boot menu. Is the kernel shown there?
