I have the same problem on an HP dv6 1030-ef. The sound does not work on the live CD. I have reported a new bug using the system-testing application. #447796.
I have manage to get around this issue in with Ubuntu 9.04 the methodology is documented here : #363870 It is far from optimal but it is the best I have been able to get. I am crossing my fingers that this problem will be fixed before 9.10 get out of its beta mode.
