I got same issue just after I install karmic A6. I update network-
manager to newest one in PPA, but it can not help I have to use
pppoeconf & pon dsl-provider to connect to internet. This issue  is too
boring.

I shut down network-manager, and set debug flag
NM_PPP_DEBUG=1 NetworkManager --no-daemon 2>&1 | tee /tmp/nm.log
