Those charts show the time frame from GRUB -> GDM start.

Here you had a filesystem check going on - of course that increases the
boot time but that's not happening on every boot.

That chart shows the time frame from GRUB -> running session.

Bootchart now runs longer and the 'time' value just shows you how long
it ran - IMO that's the real bug here. In earlier versions you could use
the time shown to compare bootcharts, but now you cannot do this and
need to take a closer look at the charts.

If you want to compare Jaunty to Karmic you have to get a chart of the
full boot from Jaunty. To do this, add 'bootchart=nostop" to the kernel
line of GRUB(2) of the Jaunty boot stanza, boot and wait till
everything's loaded (it helps to have a system monitor applet in the
panel ;-)). Then open a terminal and type "sudo /etc/init.d/stop-
bootchart start" - the chart will be generated. It would also help to
enable automated login for such comparisons.
