Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I have a Transcend JetFlash 8GB USB stick, which works perfectly in
Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.04 on the same hardware. When running Ubuntu
9.10, the stick appears on my desktop as soon as I plug it in but it is
several minutes before I can view the files contained on it. Trying to
copy files across via nautilus, or via unison on the command line takes
several hours instead of a few seconds under 9.04 or Windows.

Hardware: Sony Vaio VGN-SR29VN

This bug is also reproducible (to a slightly lesser degree) with other
USB sticks I have tried in Ubuntu 9.10
