Well i have managed to fix the problem on my laptop with a bit of
intervention.

Yes, the installer stopped working once it got to the section where it
checks your hardware and loads modules (after installing packages), but
i just cancelled the installer and then continued myself.

I simply installed grub manually and ensured the menu.lst file was
generated with update-grub and generated an initrd with update-
initramfs. Easy! :)

More to the point, the modprobe problem still existed once i rebooted
into my newly installed feisty. After an aptitude update and aptitude
dist-upgrade (using the wired network since wireless wasnt working), all
my problems were solved. Sound worked, wireless worked and most
importantly modprobe worked! Its now running like a dream.

So although there have been no new releases, it looks like the problem
has been fixed in the packages in ftp and therefore most likely wont
exist on the next pre-release cd.

So does this mean we can class it as solved?
