Well i have managed to fix the problem on my laptop with a bit of intervention.
Yes, the installer stopped working once it got to the section where it checks your hardware and loads modules (after installing packages), but i just cancelled the installer and then continued myself. I simply installed grub manually and ensured the menu.lst file was generated with update-grub and generated an initrd with update- initramfs. Easy! :) More to the point, the modprobe problem still existed once i rebooted into my newly installed feisty. After an aptitude update and aptitude dist-upgrade (using the wired network since wireless wasnt working), all my problems were solved. Sound worked, wireless worked and most importantly modprobe worked! Its now running like a dream. So although there have been no new releases, it looks like the problem has been fixed in the packages in ftp and therefore most likely wont exist on the next pre-release cd. So does this mean we can class it as solved? -- Cannot install feisty herd 3 due to modprobe problem (kernel 2.6.20) https://launchpad.net/bugs/84860 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
