Well, I actually did a search for "broadcom" in synaptic, and then did a
"complete removal" of all packages related to "broadcom" (3 of them) and
rebooted, then re-installed those three packages, and then upgraded the
system using apt-get, and there was ANOTHER 2.6.31-13 kernel upgrade in
addition to the 2.6.31-13 from the morning before, so I'm not sure
exactly what the problem was.  hope this helps.
