Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

When the segmentation fault described in bug 450077 happened, apport did
not launch automatically. Instead one of two things happened:

1. if running gnumeric from the GNOME menus, the gnumeric window silently
disappeared
2. if running gnumeric from the command line, gnumeric exited and zsh displayed
"zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) gnumeric"

My understanding is that when a program exits with SIGSEGV apport should
launch automatically (when using a development version of Ubuntu).

$ cat /etc/default/apport
# set this to 0 to disable apport, or to 1 to enable it
# you can temporarily override this with
# sudo force_start=1 /etc/init.d/apport start
enabled=1

# set maximum core dump file size (default: 209715200 bytes == 200 MB)
maxsize=209715200

$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern
|/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c

$ ls -l /var/crash
