Public bug reported:

System hard-locked during updates. On reboot update-manager requested
dpkg --configure -a. Onboard and ibus-qt4 failed to reconfigure.

On running update manager again ibus-qt4 failed to install with the
errors:

ibus-qt4: unable to execute installed post-installation script: exec
format error
