Same problem here with kubuntu karmic amd64.
I have an nvidia card with the proprietary drivers installed:
ii nvidia-glx-185 185.18.36-0ubuntu5
NVIDIA binary Xorg driver
(Apparently) no video related msgs in dmesg when I try to switch among text
(Ctrl+Alt+F1) and graphics (Ctrl+Alt+F7).
Text console is indeed working but the display is totally corrupted.
I say it's working because I blindly did a login and a reboot successfully.
